Clowns are comedians who try to make you laugh by being foolish. There are four different types of clowns, Whiteface, Auguste, Character and New Vaudeville.

The Whiteface clown paints their face with white paint and is the oldest clown in existence. They wear strange costumes, and act as comedians or are the butt of the ring performers joke.

The Auguste clown became popular the second half of the 19th century. They wear big, baggy, mismatched colorful clothes with big noses, a colorful wig and over sized shoes. They may show some natural skin but bright colored make-up is found around the eyes and mouth. Auguste clowns are the butt of jokes, do slapstick, slapping and stumbling. These clowns are more physical in their performances.

Emmet Kelly and Charlie Chaplin are two famous Character clowns. They are the most realistic looking clowns but exaggerate physical features to poke fun at themselves. Character clowns often impersonate cowboys, firemen, policemen, or hobos.

The New Vaudeville clown doesn’t wear make-up and entertains by involving his audience using various skills such as juggling, mime, acrobats, magic tricks and traditional clown tricks.
