Fun at CHA

Last week I attended the Craft and Hobby Association Trade Show in Chicago. I had a great time talking to manufacturers about their new products and some of my all time favorites.  I spent time meeting with crafty bloggers and wonderfully creative designers. I was so excited to spend time with two past Scribble Challenge bloggers, Vicki from the Creative Goddess and Jenny from Craft Test Dummies.

Jenny even brought her craft from the Scribble Challenge as a gift for me. That was so kind of her to carry it all the way to Chicago!  Thank you Jenny!!!

Next up….The Blogher Conference in NYC the first week of August.  I am looking forward to meeting up with many more Scribble Challenge Bloggers for a wonderful weekend of fun and learning.

Will you be there? Please let me know! It would be my pleasure top meet up and get to know you.

Inspiration from a Teacher!

by Megan Minutillo

Hi Scribblers!

My name is Megan and I’m so excited to be sharing with you my Scribblinspriation! I find that stories and words can often inspire the coolest pictures! I often hear a story, and read a story, and my mind just starts to imagine all sorts of characters, shapes, situations, and pictures. One of my favorite authors is Shel Silverstein, and his book of poems, “Where the Sidewalk Ends”.

Oh my friends, this is such a wonderful book! The poems and drawings that Mr. Silverstein draws will just ignite my imagination! One of my absolute, all time favorite poems is, “Sick”.

“I cannot go to school today,”
Said little Peggy Ann McKay.
“I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash and purple bumps.
My mouth is wet, my throat is dry,
I’m going blind in my right eye.
My tonsils are as big as rocks,
I’ve counted sixteen chicken pox
And there’s one more–that’s seventeen,
And don’t you think my face looks green?
My leg is cut–my eyes are blue–
It might be instamatic flu…
I have a hangnail, and my heart is–what?
What’s that? What’s that you say?
You say today is. . .Saturday?”

I picture Peggy Ann having multi-colored bumps all over her body – kind of like chicken pox, EXCEPT the bumps are all the colors of the rainbow.  They are purple, pink, blue, orange, red, yellow, green, and maybe some sparkle, and maybe some are different shapes…but they are ALL over her body.

But then I picture the sun shining, all yellow and big and smiley.  And then Peggy Ann’s parent says that it’s Saturday, and she realizes she’s not sick! The colored bumps disappear, and Peggy Ann is off to play with her friends, and have a new adventure.

If you like, “Sick”, and the fun drawings and stories that can come from one little poem, you should check out the rest of Shel Silverstein’s work! A light in the Attic, Falling Up, and The Giving Tree, are all favorites of mine.

So pick up a story, a crayon, a marker, and/or a pen, and start reading and scribbling! It’ll be fun.

Happy Scribbling!

Your Friend,

Megan

MeMo the Clown!

by MeMo the Clown

The joy of being a clown is synonymous with the joy of creativity. The creative process begins when I suit-up.  I paint my face, glue on my nose and eye lashes.  Immediately the silliness emerges and then takes over.  I practices my magic tricks, gather my gags and laugh at the same silly jokes.  The true challenge of a clown is having a little something special for everyone: a balloon, a gigantic bubble, a trick, some super-silly dance moves, a beautiful butterfly mask or a superhero disguise.  My goal is to enhance an atmosphere of play that ignites imagination and encourages the children to be creative.  Together our imaginations are made into reality.  Clowns are grown-ups who allow themselves to be children, and there is a lot of creative freedom in that choice.  My silliness provides an unique invitation for children to explore their natural silly sense of creativity.

Memo the Clown!

First impressions are important, so I start off with a blast of color and shapes.  I enter the party  with balloons blowing and twisting into surprising creations.  Some balloons swirl and spiral through the air sending giggles across the crowd.   Then I reach into my bag of tricks and pull out a colorful scarf.  That scarf spills out into a round rainbow that unravels over our heads until it fills the space. Like the center pole of a big-top, I raise the roof of our colorful space and they all gather close around me.  In our tent, we make surprise plans and then spring out.  We dance the chicken, the robot and the running man to each and every song.  Then before I say goodbye, I sit with each child to paint on their fantasy face.  I love the precious moment when they look into the mirror and fall in love with the new face who is looking back.  The sense of wonderment and thrill washes over them and over me.  I leave with a sense of fulfillment that can only come from being a creative clown!
